Top 5 Reasons Adults Take up Longboarding

teen skateboarderYes, it can be painful to watch a group of thirty-somethings who have never been on skateboards before trying to make their way safely on a bright, shiny new longboard. Between the soft spills and hard falls, veteran skaters cringe every time they see a newbie hit the pavement. But these noble and diligent adults keep at it until they become the next crop of veterans observing their own wave of newbies just getting started. Such is the cycle.

Believe it or not, adults with their own kids are embracing longboarding in greater numbers than ever before. These are adults who never considered skateboarding at all when they were younger. But now, for whatever reason, they’ve taken up their longboards as participating members of a great sporting community.

Here are the top five reasons some adults take up longboarding alongside their younger counterparts:

1. Their Kids Are Doing It

The number one reason adults are taking up longboarding is because their kids are doing it. Let’s face it; we live in a kid-centric society in which parents are striving to be part of every aspect of their children’s lives – which is not always a bad thing, by the way. Mom and dad see Junior spending hour upon hour with his cruiser longboard, sometimes skating with friends and other times skating alone, but happy either way. They want to be part of that activity as much as possible. So what to do? They go out and purchase their own cruiser boards and get to work.

2. Skating Is Great Exercise

We also live in a world that is becoming more sedentary by the day. The digital age has more people spending their careers staring at computer screens while everything they eat goes right to the thighs and belly. Thirty-somethings are realizing they need to get out and exercise if they don’t want to turn into pieces of furniture themselves. And it turns out that skating is great exercise. You can burn hundreds of calories carving out the local streets on your cruiser board.

3. Cruising for Transportation

A lot of the thirty-somethings taking up longboarding are a product of the global warming generation of the 1980s and 90s. They are sincerely concerned about the environmental impact of their actions; concerned enough, in some cases, to look at alternate means of transport around town. The cruiser longboard is the perfect vehicle for those who don’t like bicycles and prefer not to use the shoe leather express.

4. Looking for a Challenge

For some first-time adult longboarders, it is about nothing more than embracing a new challenge. They don’t want to become the kinds of people who find themselves stuck in a rut before they turn 40. Longboarding becomes something they can learn and enjoy along with a younger crowd of people who continually challenge them and push them to new heights. In other words, the challenge is a way to help them stay young and fresh.

5. Skating Is Just Plain Fun

Last but not least, a lot of the adults taking up longboarding do so because it’s just plain fun. Maybe they dabbled in skateboarding as teenagers; maybe they spent the majority of their teens and early 20s glued to video games. Either way, they’re looking for some way to bring a new wave of enjoyment to life. Longboarding fits the bill.

There are lots of reasons adults are taking up cruiser longboards for the first time. In the end, the reasons do not matter. Longboarding is a great sport with plenty of room for everyone.
